Collection Bin Bin Ordinance Approved
At the October 26, 2015 City Council Meeting the new Collection Bin ordinance was adopted unanimously! This represents a great deal of work on the part of council members, residents, collection bin companies, and our city attorney since those first meetings in April. Congratulations to all! The council voted to have it take effect immediately. City Clerk Chris Swope reminded council that action could not be taken until the ordinance is published which is expected to happen by November 5, 2015. Businesses seeking to get a permit for their bins can do so at the Lansing City Clerk website.
At the April 30, 2015 Public Safety meeting discussion continued regarding the problems with the donation bins. Reps. from Rejuvenating South Lansing made public comment opposing all the junk and waste being dumped by these donation bins. Scott Sanford, Code Compliance Supervisor, stated the property owner’s at the Kroger lot have been notified within the time frame required, if it continues, the bin(s) will be removed. Waiting for formal legal opinion from City Attorney’s office regarding the draft ordinance and permit provided at 4/9 meeting. Reps from Salvation Army and Volunteers of America were present and discussed their procedures regarding their donation bins.
At the April 9, 2015 meeting, there was discussion and comments about all the problems occurring from placement of donation bins in South Lansing as well as other areas in Lansing. The Public Safety Committee is working with a draft ordinance that has been reviewed by Zoning and Code Compliance as well as ordinance adopted by Marshall Michigan. The City Attorney’s Office is reviewing the 2 ordinances and will have a draft for this meeting. You have a chance to make public comment and work together for a solution. Please, plan to attend this meeting and help bring positive image and change to South Lansing. Hope to see you on Thursday.
